Working with a deity can be intimidating. How do you get started, and how do you know who to work with? Often, it starts with simple interest and a desire to learn more about a specific goddess or god. Sometimes it can feel like the divine is reaching out to you, and you may see symbols or a name that keeps popping up in random places. Seasonally, some witches will alternate deities based on who is present in the current energy.
There is no right or wrong way to create a devotional practice. The most important part is that you follow your instinct when choosing and pay attention to the signs.
From there, focus on three things:
1. Learn who they are
Read their myths. Pay attention to what they’re associated with—plants, animals, symbols, seasons. This gives you context for how they were understood and honored.
2. Create a place for them
Set aside a small space that will become your devotional altar. It can be simple—a candle, an offering, an object that represents them. The point is consistency, not perfection.
3. Show up regularly
Write small letters, light the candle. Leave an offering. Spend a few minutes there. You don’t need a full ritual, just a repeated moment of attention that creates a consistent practice.
That’s the foundation of it. Sometimes, it gets overcomplicated and can feel daunting. Devotion is the act of building a relationship with the divine; that is all.
If you want support getting started, having a set of tools can help you stay consistent. Our devotional kits are built around specific deities and include items tied to their symbolism, so you don’t have to piece them together yourself.
They’re meant to give you a starting point, not a rulebook.
If you’ve been feeling drawn to a particular god or goddess, this is a good time to begin.
