A History of Witch Bottles

Long before spell jars appeared on modern altars and shelves, people were making protective bottles to guard their homes and carry their intentions into the world.

Witch bottles have roots in folk magic traditions dating back to at least the 16th and 17th centuries in England and early colonial America. Traditionally, they were created as protective objects. Bottles were filled with materials chosen for a purpose—pins, nails, herbs, hair, salt, ash, written petitions, and sometimes even personal items—and then buried beneath thresholds, hidden in walls, or placed near hearths to shield a household from misfortune, illness, envy, or unwanted influences.

Over time, these bottles evolved. What once served primarily as protection expanded into forms of sympathetic and intention-based magic. Today, spell jars are often created to support our magic by calling in things like abundance, rest, courage, creativity, love, clarity, or releasing what no longer serves.

At their heart, witch bottles and spell jars ask us to do something simple but meaningful: gather tangible things that represent what we hope to call in or carry away.

A Ritual for Creating Your Own Spell Jar

You will need:
A small glass bottle or jar
Paper and pen
 A candle
Salt
Herbs, flowers, stones, or objects aligned with your intention
• Optional: ribbon, wax seal, charms

Begin by deciding the purpose of your jar. Keep it focused and specific.

Light your candle and spend a few moments considering what you are asking for and why.

Write your intention on a small piece of paper. Use present-tense language if it feels natural:
“I am financially abundant.”
“My home is protected and welcoming.”
“I am traveling to Paris.”

Fold the paper toward yourself if calling something in, or away from yourself if releasing.

Add a pinch of salt to the bottom of the jar as a foundation. Then begin layering your chosen ingredients one at a time. As each item is added, name its purpose aloud or silently.

Examples:
• Rosemary for protection
• Lavender for calm
• Cinnamon for movement and vitality
• Rose petals for love and connection
• Bay leaf for wishes and success
• Clear quartz for amplification

Place your folded intention inside.

Seal the jar and hold it in both hands. Speak your intention one final time.

When finished, decide where the jar belongs. Place it on your altar, near your doorway, beside your bed, on your desk, or bury it in a plant at your threshold. Place it somewhere it will remind you of what you are tending, and spend a moment reinforcing your intention each time you pass it.

So mote it be. 🌿
